Telangana Revenue, Housing, Information & Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy threw an open challenge to K. T. Rama Rao and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi over housing construction in the state.

He stated that if the present Congress government fails to build more houses in the next two-and-a-half years than what BRS constructed during its 10-year rule in Hyderabad, he would not contest the next Assembly elections. He questioned whether KTR would be willing to stay away from elections if the Congress government surpasses that target.

Speaking at a press conference in Hyderabad along with ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Mohammed Azharuddin, the minister asserted that the government will prove its commitment through action, not words.

He criticized BRS leaders for making baseless statements and challenged them to seek votes in areas where they had constructed houses, while the Congress would seek votes in areas where Indiramma houses are provided.

The minister announced that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will soon lay the foundation stone for one lakh Indiramma houses in the first phase within the ORR inner zone. In the second phase, another one lakh houses will be sanctioned for urban areas.

He explained that housing construction is being taken up constituency-wise, with cabinet approval already in place. Land identification is underway across 24 Assembly constituencies, and within just 12 days, around 39–40 locations have been finalized.

The government plans to construct houses on government lands ranging from 1,000 square yards to 25 acres, ensuring dignity for the poor. Notably, the houses will be registered in the names of women beneficiaries, with zero financial burden on them.

The minister highlighted that the government is allocating valuable land worth crores for housing the poor, even at the cost of revenue. So far, 3,500 houses per constituency have been sanctioned in the first phase, and with an additional 2,000 houses in the second phase, each constituency will receive between 5,500 to 7,000 houses.

He also criticized the previous BRS government, stating that it failed to construct houses effectively, leaving many incomplete and lacking basic infrastructure. The current government, he said, is committed to fixing these issues and providing essential amenities like transport and ration services.

Additionally, the government plans to auction unused shops and deposit the proceeds into maintenance funds for housing complexes. Old G+2 housing structures built decades ago in Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts will be replaced with new housing to ensure safe and dignified living conditions.
