Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen-powered train at Jind Railway Station in Haryana, marking a historic milestone in the country’s journey towards clean, green, and sustainable rail transportation. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini attended the inaugural ceremony. The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route under Northern Railway. Developed using indigenous technology, the project reflects the vision of “Make in India” and Atmanirbhar Bharat, placing India among the select nations that operate hydrogen-powered trains.

A Major Step Towards Green Mobility
Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike diesel-powered trains, it emits only water vapour, helping reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to adopt environmentally friendly technologies, particularly on routes where full electrification is challenging.
Other Development Projects
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth approximately ₹14,700 crore in Haryana, covering railway infrastructure, highways, healthcare, urban development, and public services.
