CityLightBuzz: Hyderabad, Officials Directed to Adopt AI-Based Solutions, Modernise Traffic Signals and Identify Accident-Prone Locations
Telangana Chief Secretary Shri Sanjay Jaju has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to address traffic congestion and strengthen road safety measures across Hyderabad city and the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits.
The Chief Secretary conducted an extensive review of traffic management and road safety issues at a meeting held at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat on Thursday, following the directions of Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy.
Focus on Traffic Congestion and Accident Prevention
During the meeting, officials discussed several key issues, including road safety, maintenance and modernisation of traffic signals, identification of accident-prone locations and creation of faster routes for emergency services.
Sanjay Jaju directed officials to strengthen traffic signalling systems not only in Hyderabad but also across cities, district headquarters, municipalities, urban areas and along the ORR.
He instructed the Police, Transport, Roads & Buildings, Municipal Administration, Urban Development and other concerned departments to work in close coordination to prevent road accidents and prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) at the earliest.
Officials were also directed to identify locations requiring new signalling systems and complete installations in a phased manner during November and December.
Integrated Traffic Data Platform Proposed
Emphasising the importance of coordinated decision-making, the Chief Secretary said traffic management and road safety cannot be handled by a single department.
He proposed exploring the establishment of an Integrated Traffic Data Platform that would bring together traffic-related data from different locations onto a common platform for analysis and better planning.
Sanjay Jaju also suggested preparing proposals for a dedicated and independent system named TG-TMARS (Traffic Management and Road Safety), along the lines of initiatives such as the Narcotics Bureau and TG-SAFE.
Modern Traffic Signals and Electronic Enforcement
The Chief Secretary directed officials to modernise existing traffic signalling infrastructure and strengthen electronic enforcement mechanisms.
He also called for strict measures to prevent encroachments on footpaths, emphasising that pedestrian safety must remain a key component of urban traffic management.
Officials informed the meeting that 429 traffic signalling systems are currently operational within GHMC limits, with advanced signal-control systems being utilised at these locations.
AI to Transform Traffic Management
Sanjay Jaju stressed the need to make greater use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies to improve traffic management and road safety across Telangana.
He said technology should not be restricted to detecting traffic violations. Instead, it should be used to provide citizens with safer, faster and more convenient journeys.
Officials were directed to study the latest AI-based technologies available for traffic management, congestion monitoring, accident prevention and road safety and identify suitable locations for pilot projects.
Pilot Projects to be Expanded Across Telangana
The Chief Secretary called for data-driven, technology-enabled and citizen-centric solutions to address traffic-related challenges and identify long-term solutions.
It was decided that suitable AI-based pilot projects would first be implemented at selected locations across the State. Based on the results and effectiveness of these initiatives, the systems will be gradually expanded to other areas of Telangana.

The meeting was attended by DGP C.V. Anand, Special Chief Secretary, Transport, Roads & Buildings Vikas Raj, Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi, Malkajgiri Municipal Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, and other senior officials.
