Sunil Kumar Reddy, known for making socially relevant films, announced that he is planning to make a sequel to his critically acclaimed courtroom drama “LGBT – A Legal Battle” in 2027. The film, produced under the Sravya Films banner with Subhash Chakravarthy Ravada as co-producer, is based on the lives and struggles of transgender people. Released nationwide on the 19th, the film has been receiving an overwhelming response from audiences. To celebrate the film’s success, the Film Critics Association organized a Meet the Press event at the Film Chamber, where the film’s team was felicitated. Director P. Sunil Kumar Reddy and veteran actor L.B. Sriram were honored with bouquets by the association’s office bearers. The event was gracefully hosted by Valluri Raghava Rao, who highlighted the contributions of every member of the film. Film Critics Praise the Film Film Critics Association President Battula Prasada Rao said this was the 12th event organized during his tenure. He revealed that after a long conversation with Sunil Kumar Reddy during a recent journey, he felt compelled to honor the filmmaker for bringing such an important subject to the screen. He described the film as the story of people caught between self-respect and social rejection and congratulated the entire cast and crew. He expressed hope that more meaningful films of this nature would be made.
Film Critics Association Secretary Suresh Kondeti praised the film, saying he initially wondered whether Telugu audiences would understand the title “LGBT.” However, the director explained that it is a universal title suitable for a pan-India audience. Kondeti also appreciated the film’s successful theatrical run, noting that surviving for over 30 days in a single theatre is a remarkable achievement today. He wished the film success at award ceremonies. Emotional Responses from Community Members Mukunda, a mother of a transgender woman, emotionally shared her personal journey and explained how the film realistically portrays the discrimination and hardships faced by transgender individuals from their school days to adulthood. She said the film should be screened in schools to create awareness among students and parents. Police Inspector Dasu, who has been working with the Telangana Transgender Community since 2007, said the film accurately depicts the challenges faced by transgender people, including discrimination, lack of livelihood opportunities, and social exclusion. He stressed the importance of awareness and employment opportunities for the community.
L.B. Sriram Applauds the Director Veteran actor L.B. Sriram, who played the judge in the film, praised Sunil Kumar Reddy, saying the industry had failed to recognize such a talented filmmaker for many years.
He described the film as a landmark in Telugu cinema and appreciated its sensitive screenplay and realistic portrayal of the transgender community. He added that the film helps audiences understand the lives, traditions, and struggles of transgender people and revealed that a sequel is indeed being planned.
Telangana Transgender Community Welcomes the Film
Laila Oruganti, President of the Telangana Transgender Association, thanked the Film Critics Association and director Sunil Kumar Reddy for giving transgender people an opportunity to tell their own stories on screen. She said the film realistically portrays the legal battles, discrimination, and social challenges faced by the community. She also acknowledged the role of the media in spreading awareness and helping the film reach a wider audience.
Actors Share Their Experience
Actor Ananda Chakrapani said he initially had misconceptions about the transgender community but changed his perspective while working alongside them during the shoot. He praised Sunil Kumar Reddy for consistently making films on important social issues rather than focusing solely on commercial success.
He said audience members were emotionally moved by the film, with many expressing that they wished they had supportive fathers like the character he portrayed.
Actor Vishnu Teja said he has been associated with the transgender rights movement since 2018 and felt proud to be part of a film that brings dignity and awareness to the community. He appreciated the team’s sincere effort in highlighting issues that deserve greater public attention.
Director P. Sunil Kumar Reddy concluded by thanking audiences, critics, and the transgender community for their overwhelming support and confirmed that preparations are underway to develop “LGBT – A Legal Battle Part 2,” which is planned for release in 2027.
