CityLightBuzz: A high-level review meeting on the implementation of the Safe City Project was held at the DGP Office, bringing together the four Police Commissioners, three Municipal Commissioners, and the Transport Commissioner to assess progress and strengthen urban safety initiatives across Hyderabad. During the meeting, officials emphasized that as Hyderabad continues to grow rapidly, urban safety must evolve through technology-driven policing and coordinated governance. The Safe City Project aims to create a safer and smarter city for women, children, senior citizens, pedestrians, and all residents. The review focused on expanding the use of HD CCTV surveillance, establishing Integrated Command and Control Centres in all police commissionerates, implementing Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, and leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) for crime prevention and faster emergency response.
Officials also reviewed the progress of public safety infrastructure. Currently, 12 Mobile She Toilets are operational across the city, and it was decided to add 12 more units, ensuring that each of the 12 zones across the three municipal corporations has two facilities.
Under the Safe City Project, 2,306 CCTV cameras have already been installed and are operational under Phase-I, while 862 additional cameras are being installed under Phase-II. Officials directed that all surveillance cameras be maintained in fully functional condition at all times.
To enhance pedestrian safety, Pelican (pedestrian) traffic signals are now operational at 77 locations across the city. Traffic volunteers will be deployed to assist pedestrians at busy junctions. The GHMC has also been directed to maintain all 404 traffic signals and improve pedestrian infrastructure in congestion-prone areas.
As part of public awareness initiatives, officials instructed continued deployment of mobile campaign vehicles to educate citizens on road safety, traffic regulations, cybercrime prevention, and anti-drug awareness.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation that the Safe City Project represents a coordinated effort between the Police Department, GHMC, Transport Department, and other government agencies to build a safer, smarter, and more secure Hyderabad for every citizen.
