During her official three-day visit to Sikkim, President Droupadi Murmu achieved a major milestone in public transport and sustainability by inaugurating the ‘Pink City Runner – Aama Didi Bahini Bus Sewa’ alongside Resource Recovery Vehicles for solid waste management in Gangtok.
The ‘Aama Didi Bahini Bus Sewa’ is a dedicated, all-women bus service designed to provide a secure and empowering travel environment for female commuters. Connecting Ranipool and the Gangtok Secretariat at an affordable fare of just Rs 25, the buses are operated entirely by women staff, including drivers and conductors. To ensure maximum safety and passenger comfort, these pink buses are fully equipped with modern amenities such as air-conditioning, CCTV cameras, and mobile charging points.
In addition to the public transport modernization, the President officially flagged off Resource Recovery Vehicles to strengthen the state’s solid waste management and rural sanitation infrastructure. This dual initiative highlights the government’s strong commitment to advancing women’s safety, promoting gender equality, and driving sustainable ecological development across Sikkim.
