( CityLightBuzz) The Telangana High Court expressed serious dissatisfaction over the delay in renewal and extension of accreditation cards for working journalists in the state.
During the hearing of a petition filed by the Telangana Urdu Working Journalists Federation, the vacation bench questioned the government for failing to implement earlier assurances.
The Additional Advocate General, appearing on behalf of the government, informed the court that the validity of media accreditation cards will be extended until June 16, 2026, and that official orders would be issued by the evening.
The court observed that the accreditation issue is not limited to the petitioners but affects journalists across the state. It also reminded that the government had earlier assured the division bench that the process would be completed by May 31, which was later extended to June 16 following court directions.
Counsel for the petitioners, Barkat Ali Khan, argued that delays in extending accreditation cards have caused significant inconvenience to journalists. They are facing difficulties in accessing government offices, the Secretariat, official meetings, and press briefings.
He further stated that the delay is impacting the professional freedom and freedom of expression of journalists.
The petition challenges GO 252 and its amendments, filed by the federation and others before the High Court.
The court has adjourned the next hearing to June 16, 2026.
Telangana Govt Relaxes Inter Qualification Rule for Journalists’ Accreditation
The Telangana government has stepped back from its earlier decision of making Intermediate (Inter) qualification mandatory for journalists to obtain accreditation.
Initially, the government had made it compulsory for journalists to have passed Intermediate, regardless of their experience. However, this decision faced strong opposition from journalist unions, as a significant number of working journalists in the state do not meet this educational requirement.
Responding to the pressure from media organizations, the government has now relaxed the rule. As per the revised decision, journalists who have at least two years of work experience will be eligible for accreditation cards even if they have not passed Intermediate.
This move is expected to benefit many working journalists who were at risk of losing their professional recognition due to the earlier qualification criteria.

రాష్ట్రంలోని వర్కింగ్ జర్నలిస్టుల అక్రిడిటేషన్ కార్డుల పునరుద్ధరణ, గడువు పొడిగింపులో జాప్యంపై తెలంగాణ హైకోర్టు తీవ్ర అసంతృప్తి వ్యక్తం చేసింది. తెలంగాణ ఉర్దూ వర్కింగ్ జర్నలిస్ట్స్ ఫెడరేషన్ దాఖలు చేసిన పిటిషన్పై గురువారం విచారణ చేపట్టిన వెకేషన్ బెంచ్, ప్రభుత్వం ఇచ్చిన హామీలు అమలు కాకపోవడంపై ప్రశ్నలు సంధించింది.
అదనపు అడ్వకేట్ జనరల్ కోర్టుకు హాజరై మీడియా అక్రిడిటేషన్ కార్డుల గడువును 2026 జూన్ 16 వరకు పొడిగిస్తామని, ఇందుకు సంబంధించిన ఉత్తర్వులు సాయంత్రంలోగా జారీ చేస్తామని తెలిపారు.
ఈ సందర్భంగా కోర్టు, అక్రిడిటేషన్ సమస్య కేవలం పిటిషనర్లకే పరిమితం కాదని, రాష్ట్రవ్యాప్తంగా ఉన్న జర్నలిస్టులందరికీ సంబంధించిన అంశమని వ్యాఖ్యానించింది. ఇప్పటికే మే 31లోపు ప్రక్రియ పూర్తి చేస్తామని డివిజన్ బెంచ్ ముందు ప్రభుత్వం హామీ ఇచ్చిందని, అనంతరం కోర్టు ఆదేశాలతో జూన్ 16 వరకు గడువు పొడిగించబడిందని గుర్తు చేసింది.
అక్రిడిటేషన్ కార్డుల గడువు పొడిగింపులో జాప్యం కారణంగా జర్నలిస్టులు తీవ్ర ఇబ్బందులు ఎదుర్కొంటున్నారని పిటిషనర్ల తరఫు న్యాయవాది బర్కత్ అలీ ఖాన్ కోర్టుకు వివరించారు. ప్రభుత్వ కార్యాలయాలు, సచివాలయం, అధికారిక సమావేశాలు, ప్రెస్ బ్రీఫింగ్లకు హాజరుకావడంలో ఇబ్బందులు ఎదురవుతున్నాయని తెలిపారు. ఇది పాత్రికేయుల వృత్తి స్వేచ్ఛ, భావ వ్యక్తీకరణ హక్కులపై ప్రభావం చూపుతోందని వాదించారు.
