Even Re-Releases Are Denied Theatres; Small Films Are Being Killed by a Mafia,” Says Sheraz Mehdi

Hyderabad: Actor and filmmaker Sheraz Mehdi, known for O Andala Rakshasi, expressed deep concern over the challenges faced by small-budget films in the Telugu film industry. Addressing a press conference at the Telugu Film Chamber, he alleged that a “mafia-like system” is preventing small films from getting adequate theatrical releases.

Sheraz Mehdi stated that not only are small films struggling to secure theatres during their initial release, but even re-releases are being denied screens. He claimed that despite efforts, the film could not obtain a single theatre in the Nizam region and described the situation as a strategic attempt to suppress independent and small-scale cinema.

He further emphasized that theatrical releases are crucial because OTT platforms often consider a film’s theatrical reach before acquiring streaming rights. According to him, the lack of theatre access directly impacts the commercial viability and future prospects of small films.

The filmmaker also highlighted the financial burden of regulatory and certification-related charges, including ADCC fees, which he said are making it increasingly difficult for independent producers to sustain themselves in the industry.

Sheraz Mehdi urged industry stakeholders and government authorities to ensure fair opportunities for small and independent filmmakers, warning that without equal access to theatres and resources, emerging talent and meaningful cinema could struggle to survive.
