CityLightBuzz: Hyderabad, September 7, 2026: Tension prevailed around the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Monday as Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao and several BJP and BJYM leaders were detained by police during a protest demanding the immediate release of pending fee reimbursement dues.
The BJP had called for a “Chalo Assembly” protest after alleging that police denied permission for its proposed peaceful demonstration at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park. The party has been demanding the release of pending fee reimbursement and scholarship dues, which it claims amount to around ₹15,000 crore and affect the educational future of lakhs of students. BJP workers reportedly tried to prevent the police from taking him away, resulting in tense scenes and a confrontation near Gun Park.
BJP leaders N. Gautam Rao, N. V. Subhash and BJYM state president Ganesh Kunde were also among those detained during the protest. Several other BJP and BJYM activists were taken into custody as police attempted to prevent protesters from reaching the Assembly premises.
BJP Alleges Police High-Handedness
The BJP alleged that police action was being used to suppress its democratic protest. Party leaders said the agitation was primarily focused on the pending fee reimbursement issue and the problems faced by students.
According to reports, protesters attempted to move past police barricades, leading to scuffles. Some activists reportedly sustained injuries during the confrontation and were taken for medical treatment.
Ramchander Rao has been raising the fee reimbursement issue for several weeks. The BJP says the pending amount is approximately ₹15,000 crore and claims the issue could affect nearly 40 lakh students across Telangana.
22A Land Issue Also Raised
Apart from fee reimbursement, the BJP has also been raising concerns over the inclusion of private properties in the Section 22-A prohibited properties list. The party has demanded transparency and a judicial inquiry into alleged irregularities concerning land parcels included in the list.
The BJP has warned that it will continue its agitation until the pending fee reimbursement dues are cleared and its demands concerning the 22-A land issue are addressed.
The situation around the Assembly remained tense as police continued detaining protesters and maintaining security arrangements in the surrounding areas
