CityLightBuzz: The HYDRAA-restored Uppal Nalla Cheruvu has been rejuvenated by recent heavy monsoon rains, marking a major milestone in Hyderabad’s urban lake restoration efforts. Once filled with plastic waste and polluted water, the lake is now receiving abundant floodwater due to the comprehensive rejuvenation works undertaken by HYDRAA.
As part of the restoration project, HYDRAA developed an integrated drainage system that channels rainwater from surrounding catchment areas into the lake while diverting sewage through a separate bypass channel. This has helped prevent flooding in nearby localities during recent heavy rainfall.
More than 10 acres of encroachments were removed, restoring the lake’s original spread to nearly 70 acres. The ₹20-crore project also includes two newly developed inlets that bring floodwater from Nacharam Lake and surrounding areas, along with an upgraded outlet to safely discharge surplus water into the Musi River.
In addition to improving water conservation and flood management, HYDRAA is transforming Uppal Nalla Cheruvu into a modern recreational destination. The project features a walking track, strengthened bund, children’s play area, open gym, landscaped gardens, and other public amenities.
As one of the flagship projects under HYDRAA’s first phase of lake restoration, Uppal Nalla Cheruvu is expected to emerge as a major urban water asset and an attractive recreational hub for the people of Hyderabad.
