CityLightBuzz: As a testament to the people’s government’s commitment and sincerity, the Indiramma Housing Scheme continues as a landmark initiative to provide permanent homes to every homeless poor family in Telangana.The previous BRS government abolished the Housing Department, neglecting the housing needs of the poor. In contrast, the Congress government has sanctioned 8 lakh houses for economically weaker sections through the Housing Department within two years.Taking a historic step that no previous government attempted, the people’s government has launched an ambitious initiative to construct Indiramma Houses for the poor on government lands worth crores of rupees in Hyderabad. The foundation for this landmark programme was laid today.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the government has approved 1 lakh Indiramma Houses in the first phase for homeless families residing within the HYDRAA (Hyderabad Core Urban Region) limits. The programme was formally launched at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat during the auspicious Ashada month and Bonalu festival season, in the presence of Ministers Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Ponnam Prabhakar, Mohammed Azharuddin, MLAs representing 16 constituencies under the HYDRAA region, and senior government officials. On the occasion, Konda Nagaraju from Nalgonda district, who won the Housing Department’s social media contest by suggesting the name “Indiramma Indlu” and explaining its significance, was presented with a ₹1 lakh cash award by the ministers. A brochure explaining the eligibility criteria, application process, and guidelines for the Indiramma Housing Scheme in Hyderabad was also unveiled.
In the first phase, 500 Low Income Group (LIG) houses will be sanctioned in each constituency on valuable government land located close to beneficiaries’ residential areas, ensuring that their livelihoods are not affected.To ensure complete transparency, the selection of beneficiaries will be conducted entirely through an online process, leaving no scope for recommendations or favoritism. As part of the scheme, house ownership titles will be issued in the names of women, strengthening their financial independence, social security, and empowerment. The Indiramma Housing Scheme, aimed at fulfilling the dream of home ownership for poor families, is expected to become one of the most significant housing initiatives in the country’s history.
The government had already sanctioned 4.5 lakh houses in the first phase last year. With an additional 2.5 lakh houses in rural areas and 1 lakh houses in urban areas during the current financial year, the government will have sanctioned more than 8 lakh houses, bringing the dream of owning a home to lakhs of poor families across Telangana.at the Dr. B.R. - 1. Scope & Units
- Target: Construction of 1,00,000 Low-Income Group (LIG) flats across the Hyderabad Core Urban Region.
- Phase 1 Allocation: Initial sanction of 500 houses per Assembly constituency across 16 constituencies.
- 2. Location & Structure
- Prime Locations: Built on government land parcels (ranging from 1 to 5 acres) located close to current residential/slum areas (within a 5–8 km radius) so beneficiaries retain access to their livelihoods, schools, and workplaces.
- Building Design: Modern multi-storey apartment towers (up to 10 floors) equipped with essential amenities (drinking water, electricity, drainage, internal roads, and elevators).
- Flat Size: Each flat spans approximately 528 sq. ft., with land provided free by the government.
- 3. Application & Selection Process
- Fully Online Process: Designed to eliminate middlemen or political interference; beneficiary selection will take place strictly through an online portal.
- Brochure Launch: Detailed guidelines, eligibility forms, and instructions were unveiled during the official launch event.
- 4. Eligibility Criteria
- Local Residence: Must have resided in the CURE/Hyderabad urban area for at least 10 years.
- Land/Home Ownership: Applicants must not own any pucca house or plot in the CURE region.
- One Flat Per Family: Restricted to one application per household. Previous beneficiaries of government housing schemes are ineligible.
- Lock-in Period: Allotted flats cannot be sold or transferred for 10 years post-registration.
- Women Empowerment Focus
- Ownership titles/pattas for all allotted flats will be registered in the name of the female head of the family to strengthen financial and social security.
