CityLightBuzz: Hyderabad, Alleging that women’s safety has deteriorated and law and order has significantly weakened in Telangana, the BJP Mahila Morcha submitted a memorandum to Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan on Friday.
A delegation led by Dr. Mekala Shilpa Reddy, Telangana BJP Mahila Morcha State President, met the Governor and raised concerns over the alleged increase in crimes against women, including sexual assaults, rape and attacks.
₹1 Crore Compensation, Government Job Demanded for Victim’s Family
Speaking to the media after meeting the Governor, Dr. Shilpa Reddy highlighted the alleged rape and murder of a tribal woman working as a nurse at Primecare Hospital in Tukkuguda on August 28.
She demanded ₹1 crore ex-gratia for the victim’s family and a government job for either the victim’s mother or brother, stating that the young woman was the sole earning member of her economically disadvantaged family.
She also demanded that the accused, identified as Mohammed Sanaulla Khan, be tried through a fast-track court and awarded the maximum punishment under law.
Action Sought Against Those Allegedly Involved in Attack on BJP Leader’s Mother
Dr. Shilpa Reddy also raised the alleged attack on the mother of Nalgonda BJP district president Dr. Nagam Varshit Reddy.
She alleged that the local Congress mayor and his supporters entered the family’s residence when Varshit Reddy was away, damaged furniture and physically attacked his elderly mother.She claimed that despite CCTV footage and a complaint from the alleged victim, police had not registered an FIR, and demanded strict legal action against those responsible. According to Shilpa Reddy, the elderly woman subsequently suffered serious health complications following the alleged incident and is undergoing treatment at Yashoda Hospital.
She urged the Governor to direct the authorities to register appropriate cases and take immediate action against those allegedly involved in the incident.
BJP Mahila Morcha Questions Government Over Crime Against Women
Dr. Shilpa Reddy further alleged that crimes against women have increased significantly under the Congress government headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who also holds the Home portfolio.
She cited figures claiming that 24,945 cases relating to crimes against women have been registered in the state, including 5,940 cases of sexual assault, 2,945 rape cases, 3,145 POCSO cases and 1,735 cases involving the abduction of minors.She also alleged that Telangana ranks second in the country in cases involving crimes against minors under the POCSO Act and fourth in cases of digital harassment of women.The BJP Mahila Morcha accused the state government of failing to take sufficiently stringent action against offenders and alleged that political considerations were influencing the handling of cases. These allegations are part of the BJP’s criticism of the state government.
Demand for Stronger Security Measures
The BJP delegation urged the Governor to ensure stronger security arrangements for women working in government and private hospitals, as well as improved security at government and private girls’ hostels.
The delegation also called for stronger monitoring mechanisms dedicated to women’s safety and effective implementation of measures intended to prevent crimes against women.Dr. Shilpa Reddy said the government must strengthen law enforcement, ensure timely registration of complaints and take effective action against offenders to restore confidence and security among women across Telangana
