CityLightBuzz: Hyderabad August 29.2026, A delegation of the Telangana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Commission met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at his Jubilee Hills residence and submitted a report containing several recommendations to strengthen the state’s minor irrigation system and improve water-use efficiency. The delegation, led by the Chairman of the Telangana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Commission, included members Ramulu Naik, Ram Reddy Gopal Reddy, Gangadhar and other representatives.
Focus on Water-Use Efficiency
The Commission recommended restructuring and strengthening the minor irrigation system by introducing technical units aimed at improving water-use efficiency. It also suggested developing a more effective management system to ensure better utilisation of available irrigation resources.
The report proposed establishing command-area-based management systems that integrate both minor and major irrigation resources. According to the Commission, such an approach could improve coordination and ensure more efficient distribution and utilisation of irrigation water.
Special Focus on Protection of Tanks
The Commission recommended introducing a dedicated Minor Irrigation Act for the protection and preservation of tanks across Telangana.
It suggested that the Full Tank Level (FTL) boundaries of water bodies should be identified immediately, with encroachments removed and the tank areas protected. The Commission stressed that restoration and protection of tanks are essential for water security, agricultural stability and strengthening rural livelihoods in Telangana. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy discussed the recommendations with the Commission members and suggested that the Commission focus on several important areas, including crop diversification, increasing horticultural cultivation and promoting Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).
The Chief Minister also discussed ways to improve the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations and strengthen support systems for farmers.
Commission Reviews Its Work
During the meeting, the delegation briefed the Chief Minister on the activities undertaken by the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Commission over the past two years, as well as the recommendations and suggestions submitted to the state government during this period.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the Commission’s performance and appreciated its efforts towards strengthening agriculture and farmer welfare in Telangana.The recommendations are aimed at improving irrigation management, protecting traditional water bodies, increasing agricultural productivity and creating more sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers and rural communities across the state.
